New Taipei Kings Hype Video

The New Taipei Kings are a professional basketball team based in New Taipei City, Taiwan. As the T1 League tipped off a brand new season, the Kings fresh off their championship win, were determined to carry that momentum forward. To kick things off, they commissioned Backyard Studio to produce a bold season opener video. Backyard then brought me on board to craft the visual design and animation for the piece.

Styleframe & Process

With only a few weeks to work and most footage still in production, we had to move fast. While the video team searched for usable clips, we began exploring visual directions that could capture the Kings’ desired tone. They were clear about wanting an aesthetic rooted in American streetball culture—gritty, raw, and energetic. So we leaned into bold textures, brush strokes, hand-drawn type, and collage-like treatments of footage to create a look that matched the rhythm of the piece.

Given the tight schedule, I designed many of the on-screen graphics directly in After Effects, constantly adjusting them in real-time as new footage arrived. The workflow was fast, hands-on, and highly iterative.
